Whether he’s winning competitions around the world or braving the new territory of becoming a dad, Jordy Smith is an absolute legend in surf, and we couldn’t ask for a better addition to the melin Family. With a keen eye for the right gear and a constant focus on progress, we’re excited for our future with this epic waterman.
What does a typical day in the life look like for you now? Do you have a specific routine you stick to?
My typical day kind of consists of waking up and getting some coffee. Then I'll check on my little grom and make sure that he's all good. Depending on how the surf is, I'll either go for a surf while my wife kind of takes care of our five-month-old. At the moment, we're pretty hands-on. Then I'll kind of come back from my surf or if the waves aren't very good, my wife will go to the gym and I’ll look after the kid for a little bit. Once she gets back, I will either go for a surf or go train depending on how the ocean is. Then, grab some lunch and spend a bit of time with the family. It’s really important to be present with our family, and be there as much as I can, not only for my son, but for my wife. And then, I obviously have a job to do. I'll generally try and surf maybe once or twice a day, depending on the conditions, and try new equipment and things like that out.
What does the next five years look like for you?
I think the next five years definitely looks like a lot of traveling on the tour, competing for World Titles, and just being there for my family.
What is a piece of advice you'd give to young surfers looking to follow your path?
I think everybody's path is different. The way I've made it is so unique to me and everyone's story is different. I think just be really truthful to who you are as a person. You’ve just got to be you and do it the best you can and I think if you do that, it's going to really show. Just be honest with who you are and your outcome will be positive.
Do you have a quote that you live by?
“Why try and fit in when you're born to stand out.", is definitely one that comes to mind. Also, "all the crumbs make a loaf of bread.", meaning that every little bit that you do during the day all adds up in the end. Basically that hard work pays off.
What made you want to partner with melin?
Product aside, once I had a meeting with the people from melin, I found that they're really open, they're honest, and just good-hearted people. I find where there are great people, there's a great company. Obviously, the product speaks for itself. But it’s more than just a product, it's a family. It’s something that I can see myself spending a lot of time with and just happy to be a part of that journey.
