Running Into Running: Your guide to having fun with run.
If you’re new to running, it may seem daunting. Just getting started can be scary and getting past that first mile is a milestone in itself. But consistency is key and we’re here to help guide you to make sure you have fun with run.
One easy step in the right direction is surrounding yourself with supportive people who will motivate you to keep on going! Friends always help, but run clubs are a community at your fingertips that will welcome you with open arms. And best of all, it’ll improve your odds of sticking with it!
We broke down some easy steps to find a run club that might be the best fit for you. There’s many out there, they all run but all have their own unique community and culture.
-
A quick search of local run specialty stores or run clubs in your city will turn up the best results. Every run specialty store will have a run club that typically meets weekly. Same for the additional run clubs in cities, although they might start their run at a coffee shop or a brewery. Our pro tip, show up early if it’s your first time, we’ll explain next.
- Showing up early your first time is for a reason, go seek out the leader of the club, store owner or run captain. It may take some asking around, but we can promise you that everyone will be friendly and most arriving will know who is in charge. Once you find your way, introduce yourself and let them know you’re a new runner - they will be stoked to welcome you!
- Set your own pace! This isn’t a race, so run, jog or walk your way through that first run. Whatever you do, be kind to yourself as you’re trying something new and pushing your limits. Not everyone kicks ass on try #1.
- Before taking off, stick around a mingle a bit. Let them know it’s your first time and you’re just getting into running. Meeting new faces is the best way to get you connected to the community. Guarantee they will want to know if they’ll see you at the next gathering… that’s your in - say yes!
- Recovery is huge in running. Recharge and refuel your body after this meetup. Stretching after the run is just as important and make sure to drink lots of water.
- Don’t be afraid to test out other run clubs. As mentioned in step 1, there’s probably quite a few options near you and each have their own unique community, vibe and intensity. Find the one that best suits you and that’ll make it even easier to keep coming back.
- Last but not least, invest in good gear. From shoes to nutrition, most run specialty stores around North America will have different levels of gear from affordable to high end. Get the good stuff! Quality gear not only lasts longer but makes you feel good and is better for your body. Usually the more expensive lines of gear, shoes and everything in between has a much closer attention to detail, better materials and solves problems faced in running. Typically there’s a reason the price point is higher and the sales associate will be able to answer the why!
